What size to print a QR code
A posted QR code is useless if it's too small to scan — and a waste of space if it's too big. There's an easy way to pick the right size from how far away people will scan it.
Try creating a page →The basic rule: about a tenth of the distance
Make the QR code's side roughly one tenth of the distance you want it scanned from. At 30 cm (a flyer in hand) aim for about 3 cm; at 3 m (a wall posting) aim for about 30 cm. Sizing up a little makes scans more forgiving.
| Scanning distance | QR side (guide) | Typical place |
|---|---|---|
| ~30 cm | ~3 cm | Flyer, business card, menu in hand |
| ~1 m | ~10 cm | Register, reception, table POP |
| ~3 m | ~30 cm | Wall posting, entrance door |
| ~5 m+ | ~50 cm+ | Large poster or banner |
Beyond size: keeping scans reliable
- Leave a margin (quiet zone) around it — don't crowd it with text or graphics
- Use a white background and a near-black code for high contrast
- Matte paper scans better than glossy, which reflects light
- After printing, always test-scan it from the intended distance with a phone
- When resizing, keep the aspect ratio square. A stretched, distorted code won't scan.
- Outdoors, rain and sun fade the print over time. Consider laminating it or replacing it periodically.
