What "only people with the link can see it" really means

Nobo Pages aren't indexed by search engines and don't appear in any listing. Only someone with the link can open them. That's handy — but it isn't quite the same as "secret". It's worth understanding exactly how the link behaves.

The link works like a key

The page URL contains the key needed to open it. Anyone holding that key can open the page. So handing out the link is handing out the key — who you give it to, and where you post it, is exactly who can see the page.

That key is a long, random string. It can't realistically be guessed or brute-forced one attempt at a time, so there's no risk of a stranger stumbling onto your page by typing a URL. Only the people you actually send the link to can open it.

The key lives in the part of the URL after the "#" (the fragment). Browsers never send that part to the server, so the key never appears in server access logs. It also means the page address alone — everything before the "#" — won't open the page without the key. Always share the link whole, including everything after the "#".

Things to watch for

  • Links spread easily through forwarding, screenshots and copy-paste. Whoever you send it to can pass it on.
  • A QR code posted in public can be scanned by anyone walking past. Choose what you post assuming the general public will see it.
  • "Not searchable" doesn't mean "secret". Anyone with the URL can open it, so there's no guarantee it won't reach someone you didn't intend.

How to lock it down further

  • Add a passphrase, so even a spread link only opens for people who know it
  • Use a shorter expiry to narrow the window it can be seen at all
  • Delete it early from the Admin link once you're done, rather than waiting for expiry
  • Above all, don't post sensitive information that would be a problem if it leaked
  • See also "How to use passphrase sharing safely" and "Posting personal information on a temporary page".
